A GLOBAL TEENAGE STEREOTYPE

Is there such a thing as a global teenager, or, what is more, a global teenage stereotype? Should teenagers be judged and said to be all the same? According to surveys and general opinion, global teenagers seem to be bad. They are believed to be lazy and irresponsible, as they never accomplish what they are told or asked to do. They tend to be shallow and apathetic, showing no concern for what is going on in the world. They are disrespectful, talking back, and insulting their parents, teachers, or whoever comes in their way. They are rebellious, apt to break rules. They are messy and spoilt: why should they care about anything if they are wrapped up in cotton wool? They are labelled as dangerous addicts, harming themselves with intoxicating substances.
Last but not least, the global teenagers are i-teenagers, the runaways, escaping from the real world, conquered by adults, into their safe, virtual world.

I think the main difference I've noticed between French teenagers and the Slovene teenagers is the fact that it's difficult to engage in a conflict, to me as a teacher. The Slovene students, my students and all students I've seen they're quite obedient, they follow the rules, they don't contradict you, they don't like, engaging in a conflict, and sometimes I think I miss this. I'd like more I'd like students or teenagers to be more demanding, and not to agree with me to agree with what teachers might say.

...but French teenagers, I think, they make a very heterogeneous group, as opposed to the Slovene teenagers, maybe. This feeling that's, maybe, French identity is difficult to grasp at the moment because, well, we have people in France from many, many different countries, different cultures with very different types of skin colour. And it's, this feeling of variety maybe more, it's more present among French teenagers, whereas in Slovenia you sometimes have the feeling, but this is me as a Frenchman talking, you have this feeling that not everybody is the same but, well, obviously, this is a much more a homogenous group."
