Mateja Pintar has always loved sports and started her sports career with handball at the age of 11, {achieving;receiving;taking} some visible results with Club Jelovica. Her life changed forever after an accident in the mountains that ended with a severe spine injury. She became disabled, but her {career;business;sports} in sport did not end. Mateja first took part in an international {tournament;travel;tour} in May 2000 and immediately reached the {semi-finals;half-finals;half-finale} . Soon after her graduation from high school with a top grades, she delivered an amazing achievement: at the age of 19, with the final {score;figure;results} 3:1 against Stephanie Marriage, she became the Paralympic {champion;medal;award} !
Her gold medal from Athens was followed by countless podium {placements;places;gettings} at European and world championships and the Paralympics. She returned from Beijing with a Single's bronze. In the past years, she has been named the best disabled {athlete;sportist;sportsman} in Slovenia. She has been presented with the Bloudek Prize and in 2004 was elected Honorary Slovenian Citizen of the Year by Nedeljski Dnevnik.
