Professor David Crystal is one of the world's foremost experts on the English language and linguistics. He is an honorary professor of Linguistics at the University of Wales in Bangor, the United Kingdom. He is a writer, editor, lecturer, and broadcaster.
Born in Northern Ireland in 1941, he grew up in Wales, in Holyhead, in a trilingual area, where English, Welsh, and Irish are spoken. Fascinated by the multilingual situation, he became a linguist. He studied English in London, and later found English to be such an important language that he decided to do research it.
He has written many books. His best known works are perhaps encyclopedias, books on language, endangered languages, and most recently, internet linguistics and text messaging.
In 1995, he was awarded the Order of the British Empire (OBE) for services to the English language.
