It is estimated that there are between 6,000 and 8,000 languages in the world. This is not an exact number since linguists find it difficult to agree and draw a line between a language and a dialect.
Ancient Egyptian and Sumerian are thought to be the oldest written languages, so they must be more than 5,000 years old.
Some people say that in Papua New Guinea has the most languages, somewhere between 700 and 800, which is surprising for such a relatively small country. As far as the languages are concerned, it is the most diverse country on earth.
The symbols used in written languages also vary considerably. Cambodian, for example, has over 70 letters in its alphabet, English has 26 , Slovenian 25 , but Hawaiian only has 12 .
