WHAT DOES THE FUTURE HOLD?

What do you think will happen in the future in the field of technology, healthcare, education, and our environment? Make a list of ideas and compare it with your partner. Study Grammar Log’ for the use of tenses.

Read the first part of the article, What Does the Future Hold, and choose a verb form that best completes the text.

The word future is a very relative term. It can relate to the upcoming weekend, the end of this year, decade, or millennium. Do you ever contemplate the remote future? How {will_technology_continue;is_technology_going_to_continue;does_technology_continue} influencing human lives? Will social services like healthcare and education be available for the whole world population? Will our planet successfully handle everything a man selfishly does for his own sake?
Smart houses {will_be;are_going_to_be;are} a run-of-the-mill. A home automation system will feed your pet, water the plants, and make freshly brewed coffee every morning. You {won’t_have_to_move;are_not_going_to_move;will_not_move} a finger around the house, some spoken instructions and everything will be done for you by domestic robots. There won’t be a calendar with circled dates hanging on the wall. A holographic tablet projected in front of you {will_notify;is_going_to_notify;notifies} you that you have a dentist's appointment or that it's your mother-in-law's birthday. All these changes will definitely ease our lives as well as continue the rise of an aggressive mass-consumption society.

Type in a word or phrase from the text that means the same as the following words.

contemplate = think about
remote = distant
smart_house = home of the future
run-of-the_mill = ordinary
notify = inform

Now, read the second part of the article and type in the missing words.

Several factors will affect the future of healthcare. Firstly, an increase of natural disasters, such as droughts and floods, will give rise to famine and epidemics of all sorts. Also, for the people of the Third World countries this means continuing of malnutrition, spread of infectious diseases, and physical injuries. Secondly , the growth of global population will have an effect on already dwindling resources such as potable water, arable land, and forests. Nowadays in the developing countries, diarrhea diseases are by far the most frequent cause of death among children under five years. Influential leaders of the world will definitely have to put improved water supplies on their list of priorities.
The growth of technology has already drastically changed our school systems. The greatest change is the constant availability and accessibility, not only of information, but also of collaboration in the learning process. Schools of the future will have online classes of students who will live on the other side of the country, or maybe even the globe, but this does not mean that there will no longer be traditional cohorts of students.
