2004 Tsunami
In 2004 a great underwater earthquake happened in Indian Ocean.
It happened at 07:58 in December 26, 2004. The epicentre of the earthquake was off the west coast of Sumatra, Indonesia. The earthquake was measured as a 9.3 on the Richter scale. It lasted from 8 to 10 minutes. It was so powerful that it caused the entire Earth to vibrate.
It caused a strong tsunami that spread all over the Indian Ocean. The tsunami caused heavy damage to countries such as Malaysia, Thailand, Indonesia, Sri Lanka, and it devastated the eastern coast of India.
Waves as high as 30 metres killed many people and damaged or destroyed a lot of buildings and other property. Over 225,000 people died or were not found after the Tsunami. More that a million people lost their homes.
Over $7 billion USD was donated to help the areas damaged, many buildings were rebuilt but many people are still homeless.
