Edinburgh, The Athens of the North

The capital of Scotland, Edinburgh, is also known as The Athens of the North. Here are some reasons for this unique nickname: the earliest comparison between the two cities showed that they had a similar topography, with the Castle Rock of Edinburgh having a similar role to the Athenian Acropolis. Both of them had flatter, fertile agricultural land sloping down to a port several miles away. Also, both value knowledge and are famous for the intellectual life of its inhabitants. There is one other important link between them: in 1755 British travellers brought back with them sketches of ancient ruins in Athens, such as the Parthenon and the Acropolis. People liked the Greek style architecture so much that they started building houses in this style.
